“Challenges and opportunities lie in leaning into disruption” | Being Missional Today

On 10 June, the Bing Missional Today conference will gather thinkers and theologians to explore three themes around disruption, liminality, and reconciliation.

Among the voices will be Revd Canon Dr Catherine Okoronkwo, Canon Steward at St Paul’s Cathedral and Revd Canon Dr Carlton Turner, Tutor in Contextual Theology at the Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham. Together, they will explore how disruption can serve as an opportunity for missional engagement, especially in contested spaces. You too can be part of the conversation.

Watch a trailer of their conversation here and here.

Catherine explains how disruption offers missional opportunities: “Every time you enter a space like a cathedral, where there are legacies of colonial enterprise and monuments, your whole sense of being and identity is disrupted,” she said. The challenge and opportunity then lie in leaning into that disruption, using it to enable people to journey towards the divine.

Carlton says, “I love the word disruption. For me, I welcome the opportunity to think about disruption to our theologies first and foremost, ensuring they match on-the-ground realities. Often, there is a disconnect.”

Catherine says that being able to articulate the difficulties and complexities of these spaces allows us to “open up new ways of seeing.” The goal is for these spaces to be as inclusive, inviting, and affirming as possible—not just for one group of people but for all whom God has created.
