Clergy on our Reconciling Mission programme are embracing the Advent season with creative initiatives designed to bring joy and support to their local communities. From carol-themed window displays to vital support for families.
A Creative Celebration at St Philip’s, Stratton
In Bristol Diocese, St Philip’s Church, Stratton, has embarked on a project that merges art, music and community engagement. The Priest-in-Charge, Revd Lydia Morey, invited the local community to create window displays inspired by Christmas carols.
“The Brownies have taken it on as a group activity, and a local artist I met at a community event is not only contributing but encouraging her neighbours to participate. Her involvement could lead to future collaborations,” said Revd Lydia.
The church also hosted a “Come and Sing Your Carol” event last weekend. Among attendees was Annette, a resident who showcased her own decorated window and shared the story behind it, alongside her favourite carol.
“As a church, we’ve got a way to go; but I think we are heading in the right direction,” added Revd Lydia.
Practical Generosity in Wyberton and Frampton
In the Diocese of Lincoln, the parish of Wyberton and Frampton is focusing on meeting immediate community needs through its Love Christmas initiative. The parish, where Revd Sudharshan Sarvananthan is the Rector, is distributing food and gifts to struggling families.
“This year we are hoping to bless 50 families with substantial food parcels and toys for every child,” said Revd Sudharshan. The parish works closely with local schools to identify those in need while maintaining confidentiality. The parish church undertakes such community outreach in partnership with the independent and URC churches to help ensure consistent ecumenical engagement by the local churches with their neighbours.
The parish also celebrated the arrival of the ‘RoadHoG’ bus to their community this Advent, a mobile hub offering support and engagement opportunities for young people.
These initiatives highlight something of the inspiration offered by the Reconciling Mission programme, which equips clergy and their churches to engage more deeply with their local community.
